Derek Mitchell, a TASS volunteer, was recognised for his and the other

TASS volunteers work by Devon County Council

On being asked how he felt receiving this award he said ,'It is always pleasant to be honoured by any sort of award, but you do not work as a volunteer to get awards, the awards you do want is the satisfaction that you have helped someone less fortunate than yourself, to help and reassure people on the way to the doctors or the hospital, to take a group out for the day. When you have done this and they look you in the eye and say "thank you I just don't know how I'd have managed without your help"

This is the reward that I get most satisfaction from  and I know this is how my fellow volunteer drivers also feel  but I am flattered that TASS think I am worthy  of being nominated I accepted the award on behalf of all the volunteers at TASS who give of their time freely, week in, week out helping others in our community '

Joining  TASS  was one of the best thing that I have ever done in my life, It is a reason to get up in the morning.  I would encourage anyone with a few hours to spare a week to volunteer and help make a difference to someone's life.

If you can help TASS as they help others please contact Andy at TASS on 01822 616958.   (20th June 2011)

Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) – has delivered valuable services for people over 55 from Tavistock and surrounding areas since 1985. Over this period we have developed into one of the local leaders for services for the over 55’s in this area, offering activities not only in our purpose built centre in Chapel Street, Tavistock but also through our drop in centre's in local outlying areas.

We rely mainly on volunteers to deliver our numerous activities, as well as driving for our Hospital Visiting and Transport Services. We also offer Advice and Information to support clients in making their welfare and benefit claims, as well as support in accessing other services relevant to their individual needs.
